The Gimlet was first originated by an 18th-century naval officer and the surgeon called Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette out of necessity and as a remedy for sailors to prevent them from developing the vitamin C deficiency of scurvy. The Royal Navy legislated a certain quantity of gin be on board every vessel and rations of gin were given to fortify in combination with lime cordial to “immunize”.
The Gimlet Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
2 ½ oz of gin
½ oz of lime juice, freshly squeezed
½ oz of simple syrup
Lime wheel as a garnish
Assembly
Add the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or a lowball glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.
