This decorative tile with a white "pearlshell" effect this Cleoniceras sp. ammonite from Madagascar has been carefully prepared and is Ideal for your collection, home or office.
The shell's preserved "pearlshell’" effect is the natural mineralisation of the original calcium, not opal but Aragonite, considered an organic gemstone. Dating back to the Early Cretaceous Epoch between 143.1 - 100.5 million years ago this Cleoniceras sp. ammonite is from the Mahajanga Basin of north west Madagascar.
The Cleoniceras sp. ammonite is indicative of the Albian Age (113.2 - 100.2 million years ago) a division of geological time within the Cretaceous Period and last of the six ages within the Early Cretaceous Epoch.
During the Albian Age Madagascar was submerged by a sea located within the middle latitudes of the tropical-subtropical climatic zone of the southern hemisphere. As the sea levels changed fossils were preserved in sandstone.
The Cleoniceras sp. along with other ammonites including Phylloceras, Eotetragonites, Aconeceras, Puzosia, Beudanticeras, Neosilesites, Desmoceras and Douvilleiceras define the Albian Age.
