The Devonian Period is the fourth of the six periods of the Paleozoic Era preceded by the Silurian Period and succeeded by the Carboniferous Period. The Devonian Period is often referred to as the “Age of Fishes”.

During the Devonian Period the Saharan desert of Morocco was submerged by a prehistoric ocean. During the Mid and Late Devonian tectonic activity created subsidence, uplift and changes in global sea-level changes.

As the seas retreated from the interior of Morocco marine plants and animals including Trilobites were well preserved in the black shales and mudstones with limestone beds.
